Regional News Channels living upto their promise in Andhra |
||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
The last one year has witnessed a lot of activity in the News channel arena. However, the heartening fact for the news broadcasters is that the quantum of news telecast and the consequent news viewing presents a classical case of economics, wherein increased supply has been matched by a rise in demand. With increase supply (read launch of news channels), the time spent on News channel viewing has also registered an increase at an all-India level. |

One area that has however, been a topic of debate & discussion in the media industry has been the viability and growth potential of regional news channels. We at TAM Analysis Desk analyzed one such market, Andhra Pradesh, which has witnessed the launch of two news channels in a space of six months.
For comparison, we tracked the time spent on various genres including news across three successive quarters- Oct-Dec, 2003, Jan-Mar and Apr-June, 2004. A look at the following chart reveals the fact that the time spent on News channels in AP has gone up considerably from a meager 2 minutes per day during the period Oct-Dec, 2003 to an impressive 11 minutes for the latest quarter, April-June, 2004. |

| But has this increase entirely been a fallout of the recent launch of the two Telugu News channels in AP? The following chart gives us the answer in affirmative. While the time spent on Hindi News channels declined negligibly, and English channels managed to hold their ground, although with a miniscule amount for time spent, the regional news channels clearly ruled the roost. Out of the average 11 minutes per day spent on news channels, close to 90% is accounted for by the Telugu News channels. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

What is even more noteworthy is the fact that the Regional News channels have been able to hike up time spent in spite of a drop in time spent on total TV viewing. The following chart shows the fact that the total time spent on TV has come down close to 10% in the latest quarter compared to Oct-Dec, 2003. |

| Next, let us look at the trend of time spent on each of the channel genres. It is important to figure out the genre at whose expense the regional channels have flourished. The next chart reveals that the launch of regional news channels hasn’t really been a good piece of news for regional mass channels. In a period where the time spent on regional news channels grew by 9 minutes, the time spent on regional mass channels declined by 14 minutes. |

It is obvious that the spurt in time spent on news channel in the latest quarter has largely been due to the Union and Railway Budget. But still, the fact that the regional news channels were able to get the viewers hooked on for a national event is noteworthy. This presents a clear case of a need gap for news in local language getting fulfilled. But this theory needs to validated across various regional markets to investigate whether local language news works across markets. But it certainly seems to have worked in Andhra Pradesh. We at TAM Analysis Desk would study this trend further and give you more such insights in the coming days. |
